Troubleshooting
This page covers the most common issues after installing DataSabi.
The app says "Not connected"
The app can't reach the collector service. Check whether the service is running:
systemctl status datasabi-collectorIf the output shows inactive or failed, try starting it manually:
sudo systemctl start datasabi-collectorIf that fails, check the logs for error messages:
journalctl -u datasabi-collector -n 50Look for lines marked ERROR or WARN and email isaac@arkodeon.com with the output if you're stuck.
Logged out and back in, but still "Not connected"
The most likely cause is that your user account wasn't added to the datasabi group correctly. Check it:
id -nG $USER | grep datasabiIf nothing prints, the group membership is missing. Add yourself manually:
sudo usermod -aG datasabi $USERThen log out fully and log back in. Locking the screen is not enough — you need a fresh login session.
No desktop notifications when an app uses a lot of data
Work through these checks in order:
1. Make sure DataSabi is running. Notifications are sent by the app, not the collector. If the app is closed, no notifications fire. Check for a DataSabi icon in your system tray. If it's missing, open the app — it will reappear.
2. Check your desktop notification settings.
- Open Settings → Notifications
- Find DataSabi in the list
- Confirm that Notification Popups is turned on
On GNOME: Settings → Notifications → DataSabi → Notification Popups.
3. Check that notify-send is installed.
DataSabi uses notify-send to send notifications. Confirm it exists:
which notify-sendIf the command isn't found:
- Ubuntu / Debian:
sudo apt install libnotify-bin - Fedora:
sudo dnf install libnotify
4. Check the network is marked as metered. Alerts only fire on metered connections. See Networks and metered data to check or change a network's label.
5. Fedora GNOME — tray icon is missing. The tray icon requires the AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support GNOME Shell extension. Without it, the tray icon won't appear, but the app and alerts still work as long as the app window is open or the app is running in the background.
