First run
This page describes what you'll see the first time you open DataSabi after a fresh install.
Opening DataSabi
Search for DataSabi in your application launcher, or run datasabi in a terminal.
The app connects to the collector service in the background. On the very first run the collector may still be initialising — the app list will fill in within a few seconds.
The status badge
The badge in the top-right corner of the window shows the connection state:
- Monitoring — the collector is running and sending data. Everything is working.
- Not connected — the app can't reach the collector. See Troubleshooting.
Your network
After connecting, the app shows your current active network in the Networks panel on the right. The panel shows:
- The network name (SSID or interface name)
- Whether it is treated as Metered or Unlimited
- A three-way toggle: Auto / Metered / Unlimited
"Auto" means DataSabi uses what NetworkManager reports. If NetworkManager doesn't know (common for many Wi-Fi networks), it shows as "Auto (unknown)" and is treated as metered. To stop alerts firing on your home Wi-Fi, set it to Unlimited.
See Networks and metered data for more detail.
The tray icon
Closing the window hides DataSabi to the system tray — the app keeps running and alerts stay active. The tray icon tooltip shows your total usage for today. As long as the tray icon is visible, alerts are working.
Right-click the tray icon for a menu with Show DataSabi and Quit DataSabi. On GNOME without the AppIndicator extension there is no tray icon — open DataSabi from the app launcher to bring the window back.
DataSabi also enables start-at-login the first time it runs, so the app starts automatically when you log in (hidden, not as a window). You can turn this off in Settings.
No setup required
DataSabi starts monitoring immediately after installation. There's no account to create, no onboarding wizard, and no configuration step needed.
