Networks and metered data
DataSabi tracks usage per network, so you can see how much data you've used on each connection separately. It also distinguishes between metered and unlimited connections, which controls whether alerts fire.
Automatic detection
DataSabi asks NetworkManager whether each network interface is metered. NetworkManager can report three states:
- Metered — the connection has a data cap (typical for mobile hotspots and MiFi)
- Unlimited — the connection has no data cap
- Unknown — NetworkManager doesn't know (common for Wi-Fi networks that don't advertise metering)
DataSabi treats unknown as metered — mobile routers rarely announce themselves as metered, and they are exactly the connections that need monitoring. If your home Wi-Fi shows as metered or unknown, mark it as unlimited yourself (see below).
Marking a network manually
In the Networks panel, each network has three buttons: Auto, Metered, and Unlimited.
- Auto — use whatever NetworkManager reports (shown as "Auto (metered)", "Auto (unlimited)", or "Auto (unknown)")
- Metered — always treat this network as metered, regardless of what NetworkManager says
- Unlimited — always treat this network as unlimited
Your choice is saved and remembered for that network on future connections.
Why it matters
The metered label controls whether alerts fire. DataSabi only sends data-usage notifications on metered connections. All networks are tracked regardless.
